Can Thanksgiving Be Healthy For Your Teeth?

Dental Hygiene Tampa FLWhat’s healthier for your teeth than stuffing your entire face with a large meal and then heading in for seconds? Knowing what you’re putting on your plate, for starters.

It can be easy to throw all dietary rules out the window when it’s Thanksgiving time, but here at Gentle Dentistry, we have a few smile healthy and Thanksgiving-inspired foods (and tricks) that you can use. Let’s take a closer look at a few of those suggestions.

No more Casseroles

Green bean and sweet potato casseroles are two Thanksgiving staples that you will see on almost everyone’s table this Thanksgiving. Although there are some vegetables hidden under all of the creamed soup, sugar, and marshmallows, there’s more sugar in these dishes than your teeth may know what to do with. Rather than serving these traditional casseroles, try serving fresh vegetables instead; that way you can still enjoy it, but you won’t have to worry about all of the cavity-causing sugar that goes with it.

Say yes To Sweet Potatoes

As long as they’re not completely covered in marshmallows, sweet potatoes are one of the healthiest things for your teeth on the Thanksgiving table. Sweet potatoes contain both vitamin A and vitamin C which are really good for your gum health.

Say Yes to Pie, Pumpkin Pie That Is

If your Thanksgiving dessert spread consists of pecan pie, apple pie, chocolate pie, and pumpkin pie, then you definitely have a lot of options to choose from. The option that’s best for your teeth, though, is pumpkin pie. Pumpkin typically contains less sugar than other pies, and it has Vitamin A in it which promotes healthy gums.

Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be all that bad for you. This year, use these tips to help keep your smile looking as clean and healthy as ever. To learn more about how you can take better care of your oral health, contact our Tampa office at 813-922-3093.
