Protect Your Smile with Proper Dental Hygiene Habits

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, and what better way to celebrate it by learning how to care for the smile. The teeth and gums require daily care to keep them healthy, and patients in the area of Tampa, FL are welcome to work with Dr. Angela Rasmussen and her team to learn about the various ways in which the smile’s health can be maintained.

Daily care

Dentists have encouraged patients for decades to care for their smile at home between dental visits. This includes not only brushing after every meal, but flossing as often as possible. Brushing and flossing are critical for safeguarding the teeth and gums against problems such as gum disease and tooth decay. Patients should brush their teeth for two minutes after every meal with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Patients should use a toothpaste with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance on the packaging to ensure they are using a high-quality product. Flossing can be done at least once a day, allowing patients to remove food particles from areas the toothbrush may be unable to effectively reach.

Proper diet

Foods that are high in sugars, acids, and starches can impact one’s oral health. Patients should reduce these food and beverage items while increasing their intake of nuts, vegetables, and fruits. Additionally, patients should focus on drinking more water and less sodas and juices to reduce sugar and acid impacts.

Routine visits

In addition to taking care of the teeth and gums and maintaining a healthy diet, patients should also visit their dentist at least twice a year for routine cleanings and examinations. This is the perfect time for a dentist to monitor for decay or disease which may negatively impact the health and function of the smile.
