Tooth Extractions
When you visit Gentle Dentistry in Tampa, Florida, it is the goal of Dr. Angela Rasmussen and Dr. Amanda Del Cueto to pursue everything possible to save your natural teeth. While all treatment options will be considered, there are situations where extraction becomes the only path forward to preserve your dental health. Drs. Rasmussen and Del Cueto are available to patients for professional assistance when it needs to be determined if a dental extraction is necessary.
Why Would a Dental Extraction Be Necessary?
Dental extractions could become necessary when:
- Accidents happen, and a tooth could become damaged due to physical impact. It may become impossible to save a tooth that is severely damaged. Leaving a severely damaged tooth in the mouth could lead to severe infection
- Dental caries caused by decay can often develop in areas of the mouth that are not visible. Decay may not present noticeable symptoms, such as pain, as it worsens. This can lead to structural damage which is too far advanced for any treatment other than extraction
- When a secondary (permanent) tooth is ready to come in, but a primary (baby) tooth is being difficult and not falling out, it may need to be extracted
- Wisdom teeth often need to be extracted. While some individuals may have enough room for the third molars to erupt properly in alignment, this is not always the case. For others, wisdom teeth could become impacted, cause pain or discomfort, or lead to otherwise problematic dental issues, resulting in the need for extraction
- If you are electing to receive full arch dentures but still have a few teeth in place, these remaining teeth will need to be extracted before a complete denture can be placed
- If you are preparing for braces but you have a very small arch or overly crowded teeth, an extraction may be recommended
The Extraction Procedure
While the thought of having a tooth extracted can cause anxiety or fear, Drs. Rasmussen and Del Cueto will always recommend you to a surgeon who takes the extra steps necessary to ensure your physical and mental well-being. Sometimes, a sedative may be recommended to put you at ease. This sedative is taken before your appointment to settle any anxiety you may be experiencing. The tooth will be loosened from its natural anchorage using specialized tools and a rocking motion to extract it from the socket. Your mouth will be numbed throughout the procedure. You could experience some slight pressure but no pain.
