A Look into the Effectiveness of Juvéderm and Its Side Effects

Is Juvéderm Effective? 

Juvéderm is an injectable dermal filler that utilizes hyaluronic acid to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. It can also be used for lip augmentation. The treatment provides results from nine months to a year before an additional treatment is required. 

A clinical study in the United States followed 145 patients who received a Juvéderm injection in one nasolabial fold and a competitor product, Zyplast,  in the opposite nasolabial fold. After 24 weeks, 90 percent of the patients continued to see results where Juvéderm was injected, as opposed to only 60 percent of the patients seeing the same results where Zyplast was injected. At the end of the study, 88 percent of the patients stated they preferred the results obtained via Juvéderm versus Zyplast.

Side Effects of Juvéderm 

As with any medical treatment, there will be some side effects with Juvéderm. The side effects that will follow should all be mild and temporary. During the same trial, around 80 percent of the patients experienced minor redness, pain/tenderness, swelling, and bruising. All these side effects were very minimal and quickly went away. To minimize complications with this treatment, you should avoid the following during the first 24 hours after the injection:

• Exercise
• Excessive exposure to the sun and extreme heat
• Consumption of alcoholic beverages

Failure to follow these guidelines could result in redness, swelling, or itching near the injection site. If you experience swelling, place a cold compress or ice pack onto the swelling for a few minutes. Most side effects of the Juvéderm treatment subside in patients within a week or less.
