Oct
October is National Dental Hygiene Month, and what better way to celebrate it than by learning how to care for the smile? The teeth and gums require daily care to keep them healthy, and patients in the area of Tampa, FL, are welcome to work with Drs. Loc Tong and Angela Rasmussen and their team to learn about the various ways in which the smile’s health can be maintained.
For decades, dentists have encouraged patients to care for their smile at home between dental visits. This includes not only brushing after every meal but flossing as often as possible. Brushing and flossing are critical for safeguarding the teeth and gums against problems such as gum disease and tooth decay. Patients should brush their teeth for two minutes after every meal with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Patients should select a toothpaste with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance on the packaging to ensure they are using a high-quality product. Flossing can be done at least once a day, allowing patients to remove food particles from areas the toothbrush cannot effectively reach.
Foods that are high in sugars, acids, and starches can impact oral health. To reduce these impacts, patients should reduce their intake of these foods and beverages while increasing their intake of nuts, vegetables, and fruits. Additionally, patients should focus on drinking more water and less sodas and juices.
In addition to taking care of the teeth and gums and maintaining a healthy diet, patients should also visit their dentist at least twice a year for routine cleanings and examinations. This is the perfect time for a dentist to monitor for decay or disease, which may negatively impact the health and function of the smile.
