What Are Veneers And What Are The Options?

Dr. Loc Tong describes the different kinds of veneers and when they are indicated…

Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain we apply to the outer surface of the tooth to give it a natural, but improved look, while adding strength. These are successful options for patients who are looking to improve the color, position, contours, and shape of their teeth. They’re also a great option for people with spaces between their teeth or fractured teeth. Due to the high-tech properties of the porcelain, they are stain-resistant, so they maintain their beauty for a longer time, and because we don’t have to remove as much tooth structure as we’ve done traditionally in the past with crown preparation, they’re an excellent, conservative approach for giving the patient the smile that they’ve always wanted.

Minimal prep veneers require minimal tooth modification, are limited to the outer layer of the tooth enamel, and require no anesthetic. These are ideal for patients with small or worn teeth and gaps or spaces between the teeth. Because all veneer cases don’t lend themselves to minimal prep veneers, we offer a courtesy consultation to come into our office so we can discuss their options. The difference between the traditional veneers, and the minimal prep veneers regarding the time taken for the appointment, is that we will be placing provisionals or temporary veneers on your teeth after we prep your teeth for traditional veneers. We won’t do this with minimal prep veneers, so there is a time saving in the minimal prep technique.
