It’s safe to say that parenting teenagers may be the hardest thing you’ve ever done. Not only are teenagers naturally defiant, but they rarely listen to what you tell them— no matter how much sense it may make. If you have noticed your teenager’s dental hygiene falling behind and nagging them isn’t getting you anywhere, we’ve got a few tips that may help.
If there is one thing to know about teenagers, it’s that they thrive off of their self-image— especially now that social media has taken over their lives. When you’re around them, try to talk to them about their oral health in terms of their image– for instance, emphasize that a cleaner smile makes better selfies. As an added tip, buy them whitening toothpaste and over-the-counter whitening strips as a helpful reminder to not only brush their teeth but to get whiter teeth in the process.
You and your teen may be surprised to learn that you should r brushing for two to three minutes at a time. Be honest, have you seen your teen brush their teeth for longer than 30 seconds? To get them to spend more time brushing, try looking for a timer based app or just encourage them to use the timer on their smartphone every time they rush.
The more sugar and soda you have laying around the house, the more likely your teenagers are to snack on them. Try to replace sodas with carbonated water, and cookies and candies with fruits and veggie snacks.
If you are having a hard time getting your teenager to brush their teeth or care about their oral hygiene, try these easy tips listed above. To learn more tips or to schedule their next cleaning, contact our Tampa office today: (813) 734-7102.
